An unusual, modernist painting by Hilda Altschule, 1950. Entitled "Orpheus and Euridyce", oil on canvas. A quick note about the artist "Hilda Coates Altschule (New York, Russian, 1900 - 1983) was born in Russia and was active/lived in Rochester, New York. Painter, sculptor, she studied at Hunter College, and Cornell University, M.A. Her artworks were exhibited at Great Lakes Exhibition, Cayuga Museum of History & Art; Albright A. Gallery, 1939 (prize); Lillian Fairchild award, Rochester, 1945; Finger Lakes Exhibition, 1950 (prize); N.Y. State Exhibition, Syracuse, 1950 (prize); Cortland Fair, 1953 (prize). She worked as an assistant lecturer at the University of Rochester in early 1960s. While at first she painted in a realistic expressionistic style, resembling German Expressionism, her later work incorporated cubist elements".
