A Classic midcentury watercolor and ink on paper by Robert Freiman, signed and dated 1957.

Robert J Freiman (b. 1917 - d. 1991), deaf from birth, was born in New York City and attended the Lexington School for the Deaf. He studied art at the National Academy of Design, Pratt Institute, the Art Students League, the Parsons School of Design, and, in Paris, at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. Freiman’s spectrum of styles evolved considerably over the course of his long career, ranging from early portraiture and realistic landscape to mixed-media works using watercolor, acrylic, and pen. He was a regular exhibitor at the Sidewalk Art Show beginning in the 1930s. Later in his career, his style became abstract, with metaphysical landscapes and elements of architectural fantasy. Freiman showed in such prestigious

galleries and exhibitions as the Whitney Museum of American Art, International Exhibition of Fine and Applied Arts by deaf Artists at the Roerich museum, The Associated American galleries and National Academy of Design. Through the 1940s he had numerous exhibits at Doll & Richards. Freiman painted portraits of many artists, actors and well-known personalities of his day.

In 1977, an exhibit entitled "The Silent World of Robert Freiman: His Paintings and Portraits" was held at the Edward J.Brown and Associates Studio in NYC. He has been awarded many honors; perhaps the most significant accolade has come from critic Pierre Rouve in the London Art News and Review, who called Robert Freiman the best American watercolorist since John Marin. In additional to many private collections, his paintings are found in the Boston Fine Arts Museum, the Connecticut Museum at New Britain, The Kenneth Taylor Galleries at Nantucket, and Le Musee Municipal de Saint-Paul de Vence.
